Sustainability has been at the heart of Pfleiderer’s business since it was founded over 130 years ago.
We demonstrate our commitment to sustainability through our concrete performance. We have reduced greenhouse gas emissions in our direct and indirect electricity and heating requirements by 42% since 2020. In addition, we have a closely controlled, regional, and highly circular wood supply chain. We source 93% of the wood we use for our products from Germany and the remaining 7% from directly neighbouring countries. Three quarters of the wood used in our products consist of sawmill residues and recycled wood. In line with our ESG targets, we have increased the ratio of post-consumer recycled wood at a fast pace to 57% - after 42% in 2020 - meaning we have exceeded the target value of 50% for 2025 ahead of schedule. We therefore aim to achieve a share of at least 65% post-consumer recycled wood in our total wood mix by 2030. Naturally, we control 100% of the origins of our wood raw materials through third-party verified chain-of-custody systems.
As a “naturally sustainable” company, we are clearly committed to the goals of the Paris Agreement and aim to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2045. In addition, Pfleiderer has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As part of this commitment, the definition of the emissions reduction pathway and the base year are determined by SBTi requirements. Consequently, the calculation methodology has been adjusted. We are also committed to the goals of the UN Global Compact and promote the Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and zero tolerance for corruption.
We work towards our vision – this principle guides us in our daily actions so that we can become even more sustainable. We are constantly challenging ourselves in all aspects of sustainability and see it as our duty to improve in all areas.
Based on our past successes, we updated our sustainability strategy in line with the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive based on our 2024 Double Materiality Assessment. We continue to translate our commitments into tangible actions and quantifiable targets that have a scientific foundation, and are committed to reporting transparently on our target achievements on a regular basis. All targets up to 2030 are described in our latest Sustainability Report and can be found on our website.
We are pleased to see that our efforts receive external recognition. Thanks to the consistent implementation of our ESG strategy and other efforts, Pfleiderer was ranked in the top 1 percent of all 150,000 companies evaluated and received the platinum medal. Building on this momentum, we remain firmly committed to driving tangible progress and setting clear, measurable standards for sustainability in our industry.
